
Colington Harbour
A deep water community, Colington Harbour, located on the Albemarle Sound has some 12 miles of bulkheaded canal and sound front lots. Boat access to the Atlantic Ocean is through Oregon Inlet approximately 24 miles by water to the south. The Intracoastal Waterway is just 11 miles to the west. The subdivision is on Colington Island, four miles west of the Wright Brothers Memorial and the Atlantic Ocean.
There are 2,413 lots in the Harbour, 2,257 in the Harbour proper and 156 in the Modular Home Section. The majority of the lots are 50’ x 150’. The picnic area, playground, basketball court, sandy beaches on the sound, boat launching ramp, boat slips for rent and fuel dock are available to all residents. Boat slips rent on a first come first serve basis. Rental fees are as follows: per year - $ 600/sm $ 800/lg, per 6 months - $ 400/sm $ 600Ilg, per month - $ 90/sm $ 100/lg, per week - $ 50/sm $ 75/Ig, and per day - $ 15/sm $ 2511g.
The Harbour operates under a set of restrictive covenants and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, elected by members of the Property Owners’ Association. A volunteer Architectural Control Committee oversees house plans and the pleasant appearance of the Harbour neighborhood.
The present annual assessment of $187 .00 per lot pays for the maintenance of the private roads (FHA AND VA approved), the salaries of the Association Management and the 24 hour security guard coverage. The assessed rate can be changed only through a majority of votes cast by the property owners.
The activities of the clubhouse, Olympic size swimming pool, children’s pool and tennis courts are available to club members. Membership In the Coliugton Yacht and Raquet Club Is open to all residents. There is an initiation fee of $100 and a yearly fee of $200 for a family membership.
Presently there are approximately 1,800+ homes which have been built in the Harbour proper. Prices for homes range from $ 200,000 to $ 799,000. Prices of lots start at $130,000 and go up to $ 200,000 and well above, for waterfront lots in some of the more desirable locations.
Dare County, with its reverse osmosis plant, supplies water at a cost of $6.67 per 1,000 gaL (plus base rate of$ 10.07) every three months. For those desiring to build, the hook-up fee is $2,947. Taxes, which are paid only to Dare County, are S .405 per $ 100 assessed valuation and Include twice weekly trash pickup at your curb.
The island Itself boasts an excellent volunteer fire department, two churches, several restaurants and, of course, a highly respected real estate company. Just off Colington Road, ten minutes from the Harbour, are a Dare County Library, an active Senior Center and a Post Office. Adjacent to these are the First Flight Elementary and Middle School and the new First Flight High School. 700+ children from Colington Harbour currently attend Dare County Schools.
